Shell garage cordoned off after robbery as van crashes into lamppost

Two cordons were set up after a cash-in-transit robbery at a Shell petrol station.

Merseyside Police confirmed that at around 12.40pm officers received reports that two men grabbed a cash box from a security guard at the Shell station on Liverpool Road in Huyton. No threats are believed to have been made or injuries caused.

A short time later officers received a report that a white van had crashed into a lamppost on Elmswood Grove, a short distance from the scene of the robbery, and that the cash box had been left on the road with coins in it. CCTV and witness enquiries are currently under way.

Passers-by at Elmswood Grove told the ECHO they were "shocked" to see a police cordon in place on Wednesday afternoon as officers were seen speaking to people in nearby properties. One person, who has lived in the area for six years, said it's "usually a very quiet" place to live and she was "surprised" to see the police activity as that is usually a rare sight in the area.

Another passer-by added she saw police officers "lined up" within the police cordon during the early afternoon and she too was surprised to see a cordon in place. A man, who lives nearby, said there is "never usually any trouble here".

Many people walking past the "usually quiet and calm" close were quick to comment on their concern as they "hoped all was okay".

Chief Inspector Col Rooney said: "We are in the early stages of the investigation and are keen to speak to anyone who saw the robbery and the collision on Elmswood Grove. Please check your CCTV or dashcam footage for anything that might help with the investigation. The smallest detail could be the key to finding those responsible and removing them from the streets."
