Shelbourne sign ex-Shamrock Rovers striker Dan Carr

Damien Duff has bolstered Shelbourne’s attacking options by swooping for former Shamrock Rovers striker Dan Carr.

He spent the 2018 season with the Hoops and most of 2019 - scoring 17 goals across that time - before leaving that August for Cypriot side Apollon Limassol.

Carr, 27, then had brief spells in Finland with RoPs and in India with Bengaluru United before joining Welling United in England.

And since leaving the League of Ireland, the Englishman has won six caps for Trinidad and Tobago, the most recent of which came in a World Cup qualifier last August.

Carr was a Shamrock Rovers team-mate of new Shels assistant boss Joey O’Brien as well as Reds skipper Luke Byrne.

And Shels manager Duff said: “I’m delighted that Dan has chosen us over a host of other clubs.

“He knows the division which is important, can create out of nothing and has an absolute edge to his game that I love.

“Dan has a massive hunger and desire for this season which is the reason he has settled so quickly.”

And Carr said of his return to Ireland: “I’m here to help Shels win as many games as possible. There’s great energy in the squad and I can see there’s no fear there.

“I’m looking forward to playing in Tolka Park and working with Damien, Joey, David McCaillister and the whole squad and staff. I can’t wait to get going.”

Meanwhile, Derry City's management team clocked up the air miles to land Matt Smith.

And the Scottish forward revealed that was a leading factor in why he chose to join the Candystripes over St Pat’s and other clubs abroad.

Smith was an important member of the Saints side that won the FAI Cup and finished second in the league last season.

But while the Inchicore outfit were hopeful that Smith would return, he signed a two-year deal with Derry this week.

And the fact that Derry boss Ruaidhri Higgins and assistant manager Alan Reynolds hopped on a flight to Scotland to meet Smith helped secure the deal.

Smith said yesterday: “It's good to be a Derry City player as it was a really tough decision and I had a few options abroad.

“But the gaffer came over to Scotland a month ago with Rennie and told me what he wanted to do.

“It was a tough decision leaving St Pat’s but look, I really enjoyed my time there but it's good to be a Derry City player.”

And Candystripes boss Higgins feels the club have landed a coup by signing the attacker.

Higgins told Drive 105: “We worked hard getting him here and we showed patience. He’s going to add to an exciting front line that we already have.

“It’s not difficult to get on an airplane and if you really want that, you’ll do it. We went over and laid out our plans and we have had numerous conversations since then.”

And Higgins added: “Our supporters will see his quality, his aggression and how he presses. He also creates goals and scores.”

Cork City have signed Canadian midfielder Matt Srbely on loan from Tampa Bay Rowdies.

Rebels boss Colin Healy said: “I know Neil Collins, the Tampa Bay manager, from Sunderland and we heard that Matt might be available.

“Neil had a lot of good things to say about him. He’s a good player, an attacking midfielder, and he will strengthen us in midfield.”
