The football just keeps on coming. Sarah Rendell has Liverpool v Wolves for you, right here:

Two-goal hero Josh Windass speaks to BBC: “It was enjoyable. We’ve been on a good run of form … it was a good performance. It’s always nice to score. I’ve been in good form. It’s nice to score.”

Enjoyable. Good. Nice.

Reaction coming up. But here is some reading to be going on with:

Yes, Eddie Howe made changes, but that is a superb addition to the managerial CV of Darren Moore. His team were outstanding from first to last. They pressed well, they passed well and they took their chances. A memorable win and a place in the fourth round of the FA Cup is their reward. Lovely, lovely stuff.

Full-time! Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 Newcastle

It’s over! They have done it. Well done indeed, Sheffield Wednesday.

Updated

90 min +7: A final free-kick for Newcastle after a foul on Guimarães. Trippier will deliver it. It’s a dangerous spot near the area on the right.

90 min +6: Seconds remain! Wednesday clear the ball downfield again! They are nearly there.

90 min +4: Newcastle are literally camped in Wednesday’s half. Manquillo lofts a cross in. Dawson claims it. The goalie has had a stunning game.

Josh Windass is named the man of the match.

Updated

90 min + 2: The home side clear their lines to a huge roar. They just have another four minutes to avoid conceding and they are in ‘dreamland’. Or certainly the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Updated

90 min: A minimum of six minutes will be added on. Byers has gone down in midfield following a challenge with Joelinton.

88 min: Smith and Palmer off for Wednesday, Paterson and Hunt come on. A place in the fourth round beckons … The tension is palpable. So is the sense of anticipation among the home fans as a memorable result draws closer.

Updated

87 min: A smart passing move by Newcastle and it ends up with Ritchie on the edge of the box. He scoops it over the bar.

86 min: Yet another corner. Yet another good clearance, this time by Iorfa for Wednesday. Can the hosts hold on??!

Updated

83 min: Another corner for Newcastle … Trippier will deliver it. It’s a fierce bending corner but Smith nods it out for another.

Updated

80 min: There are 10 minutes or so for Sheffield Wednesday to hold on to this … they continue to run themselves into the ground.

Joelinton is storming through into the penalty area and he lays off a good pass for Wood. Wood hits it first time, trying to bend it into the far corner … and he spoons it horribly high and wide!

75 min: Windass crashes a free-kick against the bar!

Full-time! Coventry 3-4 Wrexham

Another upset! The National League side have beaten Championship opposition.

Updated

West Ham have beaten Brentford 1-0. Grimsby have defeated Burton Albion by the same score … and Luton and Wigan drew 1-1.

72 min: Live commentary is far from easy. But it would be remiss of me not to mention that Keown called Sheffield Wednesday a “well machined oil” earlier.

Trippier is brought on and immediately goes to take a corner. Wood flicks it on at the near post, Dawson gets a touch in goal, but can only parry it to Guimarães who tucks the ball into the empty net. It’s showtime!

Goal! 69 min: Sheff Wed 2-1 Newcastle (Bruno Guimarães)

Newcastle are back in it!

68 min: Trippier is on for Newcastle.

Josh Windass, son of Dean, is suddenly sent through one on one with Dubravka thanks to a perceptive, simple ball by Smith in behind from a central area. He needs no second invitation to belt an accurate finish into the corner of the net. That’s his fifth goal of the week! The camera settles on Howe’s reaction, and I fancy there was an expletive in there as he assesses his side’s defending.

A fine finish gives Josh Windass and the Owls their second goal of the night.

Goal! 65 min: Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 Newcastle (Windass)

Windass is on fire! What a finish!

64 min: Newcastle build a little pressure. Almiron rolls a ball across on the edge of the box for Joelinton, who hits it first time and skies it. The home fans roar with delight.

62 min: Windass goes down and needs some treatment. Moore has a word with his players during the break in play. This would be a fantastic result in his managerial career, which has included spells at West Brom and Doncaster before his current job at Hillsborough.

Updated

60 min: It’s going to be a lively night in Sheffield whatever happens … but the supporters would love to head for the city’s bars with a win against Premier League opposition under their belts.

58 min: Botman heads wide for Newcastle. Willock, Almiron and Guimarães are all introduced by Howe for the Toon Army. Longstaff, Murphy and Anderson go off.

Updated

Latest scores elsewhere:

Brentford 0-1 West Ham
Coventry 3-4 Wrexham
Grimsby 1-0 Burton Albion
Luton 1-1 Wigan

55 min: Eddie Howe is pictured scribbling in a notebook as he plots Newcastle’s way back into this.

54 min: Anderson is denied, at point-blank range, by a stunning save by Dawson! He had to score. But he didn’t.

The goal all comes from a sensational turn on halfway by Byers. Two Toon players are bearing down on him in midfield. He turns on a sixpence and leaves them both for dead. Then he spreads the ball out to the right. Palmer swishes a cross-come-shot which finds Windass, who sweeps the ball in from close range. Great stuff. Windass scored a hat-trick a few days ago, by the way. There was perhaps a hint of offside to it, but there is no VAR, and the goal stands.

50 min: Chris Wood is immediately a threat for Newcastle and has a shot blocked.

Botman then cracks a shot from about 30 yards that skews wide of the post … but it was sufficiently powerful that Dawson was scrambling across his goal for Wednesday.

48 min: Newcastle’s Ritchie goes down heavily in midfield, bashing the turf in frustration and pain, after a coming together with an opponent. After a few minutes he is ready to continue … the cameras show one of his socks that has been shredded near the bottom. Looks painful indeed. But anyway he seem to be ok to try and run it off.

Second-half kick-off!

Chris Wood is on for Newcastle, Isak has gone off. Adeniran on for Dele-Bashiru for the hosts.

Let’s have a goal or two.

Updated

Half time! Sheffield Wednesday 0-0 Newcastle

All square at the break. A very decent watch so far.

Half-time reading!

45 min: Isak sprints on to a ball over the top and tries to take it in towards goal. McGuinness shows good pace to recover and Isak’s touch lets him down, too. Danger cleared for Wednesday.

Dele-Bashiru is now booked – Longstaff is in a heap on the floor. The Newcastle man had previously pulled off a superb clean tackle on Dele-Bashiru who ‘left a foot’ in in return.

44 min: Murphy races on to a bouncing pass for Newcastle and tries to guide it beyond Dawson. He lifts it past the goalie but it’s always off target.

42 min: Newcastle are exerting a little more control now. The frantic pressing by Wednesday has dropped off in intensity somewhat. And even though Howe made eight changes, there is no question which side possesses more quality in possession. You sense Newcastle will hurt Wednesday when the game opens up a bit.

Updated

39 min: Newcastle win another free-kick, what looks a harsh decision against Vaulks for handball on the edge of the box. Isak hits the dead ball but it’s a weak effort that he looks to tuck under the wall.

Updated

38 min: Isak is fouled and Newcastle have a free-kick in a promising position. Ritchie hangs it up to the far post. Wednesday defend it well, Dele-Bashiru clearing his lines.

36 min: Space opens up again in the Newcastle defence which is looking far from watertight. Windass finds Smith, who is contained by the Toon defence.

Vaulks then bends a low ball into the corridor of uncertainty, which flirts with the far post! But Newcastle survive again.

Updated

33 min: Now Joelinton fouls Vaulks in the middle of the park. The Wednesday faithful again voice their disapproval in the strongest terms. The Owls fans are enjoying the evening, relishing the possibility of an FA Cup giant-killing. Can the players find a breakthrough before half time?

33 min: If you want to keep across the live scores from the FA Cup and from across Europe, this is your one-stop shop.

Updated

29 min: The Wednesday pressing is good. Newcastle are unable to settle on the ball from long. Longstaff looks for Isak with a long diagonal ball to the Magpies’ right. Then Wednesday get it back, and there is a really nice piece of skill by Smith in midfield, turning three players and passing to Windass after Moore’s men build nicely from the back. The hosts cannot turn it into a penetrating attack, though.

Updated

27 min: Palmer snaps into a tackle on halfway with Anderson. He wins it and dribbles off with the ball but the referee pulls it back for a free-kick to Howe’s men. The crowd wails its disapproval.

Ritchie then has a chance for Newcastle, hitting a first-time shot with his right foot, but he scuffs it.

26 min: Palmer dispossesses Murphy in midfield for Wednesday but they immediately lose the ball again. It’s gone a bit scrappy now, but the atmosphere remains spicy and Newcastle are by no means in control of this.

23 min: The pace of the game has settled somewhat after a blood and thunder opening 20 minutes. Wednesday will be disappointed not to have got the ball in the net – Newcastle were rocked back on their heels a bit.

Now, Isak has a sniff of goal and shoots powerfully from an angle, from inside the area, but Dawson makes a decent save and parries the ball out for a corner.

Newcastle’s Alexander Isak fires off a shot but he’s denied by Owls keeper Cameron Dawson.

Updated

20 min: Vaulks goes down in midfield for Wednesday after an accidental clash with Anderson. Nothing in that – Vaulks was looking to make a challenge from behind and Anderson was trying to hold him off.

In “by the way” news, I think Martin Keown has done two so far. By the way.

Updated

17 min: The crowd remains noisy. This unfamiliar Newcastle lineup do not look particularly comfortable when playing out from the back.

However, Lewis now sprints down the left for Howe’s men and cuts the ball back from the byline with plenty of options in the middle. The hosts manage to clear.

Updated

15 min: Another scare for Newcastle! Anderson plays a very poor back pass looking for the goalie Dubravka. Windass is on to it in a flash for Sheffield Wednesday, and clips a shot wide when one-on-one. I smell a CUPSET here.

Safe to say that some of Newcastle’s squad players are yet to impress the gaffer in these early stages.

Updated

11 min: The home fans are making plenty of noise. They have seen their team nearly get on the scoresheet early doors. Now Manquillo breaks down the right again for Newcastle … the keeper rushes out, and Manquillo ghosts past him on the outside. He tries to cross for Isak but McGuinness is on hand to clear.

“Best recipe ever is to follow the guidelines about roasting, adding the balsamic glaze then add lightly crisped pancetta, then throw the entire lot in the rubbish and serve peas instead,” says Brian Robson. “This might be influenced by having to pick sprouts for two solid days on the Isle of Wight in order to make the bus fare home to Newcastle and waiting for 2 weeks for my fingernails to heal. Disgusting vegetable.”

10 min: It’s been a very lively start with both teams playing at a high tempo and looking to get the ball down and play. Sheffield Wednesday know they have a very decent chance here given all the changes made by Howe.

“It’s 4:54 am here in Australia and at this point I embody “Up For The Cup”,” emails Chris Paraskevas (about 20 minutes ago). The night isn’t off to a good start: my pre-match sleep was interrupted by awful house party music (Hardwell, Axwell + bad dubstep) that has progressively gotten louder since 9pm. The cops were busy. So I went across the road in my 90s Keegan drill top and politely asked them to turn the music down. Now we have blissful silence on my street and I can watch us perform our annual embarrassment in the FA Cup.”

6 min: A sloppy throw by Lewis for Newcastle allows Palmer to steal in and flash a shot wide of the far post!

Newcastle counter with a fine move down their right wing. Manquillo floats a cross into the middle, where Isak nods it down … Dawson makes a good save! It wasn’t the most confident or powerful of headers but it was still a decent stop by Dawson.

4 min: Ritchie bends a fine free-kick into the danger zone for Newcastle, from their left wing. Isak was lurking but the ball deflects out for another goal kick to Sheffield Wednesday.

“If Mary Waltz is reading, I suggest she toss her roasted brussels sprouts in a little balsamic glaze (preferred to vinegar), after she takes them out of the oven,” emails Joe Pearson. “I guarantee she won’t regret it!”

Updated

3 min: Smith makes a good run down the right win for Sheffield Wednesday … he digs out a decent cross too but no one is there to get on the end of it for Darren Moore’s team.

2 min: An early spell of pressure for Newcastle, who are playing all in white. Eventually the hosts win a goal kick and will be able to get the ball in the opposition’s half.

“Too many changes in both teams to make an informed prediction,” emails Richard Slassor. “Home advantage has to make difference tonight and conditions will level it up.”

First-half kick-off!

The Owls get things moving. Here we go.

Match reports from today. Plenty going on:

Eddie Howe, the Newcastle manager, also has a chat with the BBC. He says Callum Wilson is being rested as “he’s coming off the back of a long illness” while Saint-Maximin was feeling “under the weather” yesterday and hence has also been left out. Also, he said Isak will not play 90 minutes but that he’s happy the forward has “done the work he needs to do” to be ready to play. There is no risk in playing him, Howe says, over and above the usual ones associated with having a game of footie.

Darren Moore, the Sheffield Wednesday manager, speaks to the BBC: “It’s the beauty of the FA Cup … a special night under the lights against Premier League opposition. It’s a chance for our players to embrace the occasion. We know tonight is going to be a stern test. I said to the boys it’s a game to savour … they’re a good team, we’re a good team, go and play the game and not the occasion.”

Dion Dublin is having a nice time in Sheffield.

Alan Shearer and Dion “Homes Under the Hammer” Dublin are alongside Lineker in studio. It’s as if the Qatar World Cup was nothing but a fever dream. It’s January, the weather is awful, and it’s the FA Cup third round.

Updated

Whose feathers will be ruffled? The Owls, or the Magpies?” inquires the BBC continuity announcer. Gary Lineker is in the presenting hotseat, meanwhile. This must be a big game.

More match reports!

Will Unwin was at Technique Stadium to carry out a swift rewrite when West Brom levelled in stoppage time against Chesterfield:

“Chesterfield know a thing or two about FA Cup shocks, although it has been 26 years since they made it to the semi-finals as a third-tier club. Armando Dobra thought he had created a new chapter in their history until Brandon Thomas-Asante’s injury-time equaliser.”

Louise Taylor was in Middlesbrough to see Brighton hit five, featuring a double from Argentinian World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister:

“In many ways Brighton are a template of the type of team Michael Carrick eventually hopes to turn Middlesbrough into and, with Alexis Mac Allister scoring twice, they certainly set an example to aspire to. Even before Mac Allister’s second-half introduction Roberto De Zerbi’s side were on top, and ahead, but the arrival of the World Cup winner emphasised the gap between the Championship’s top six and the Premier League’s top 10.”

Team news

The teams, thanks to the magic of Twitter. The Sweden forward Alexander Isak starts for Newcastle following a lengthy spell out with a thigh injury, one of eight changes for the Magpies. He has been out since September. Dan Burn, Kieran Trippier, Miguel Almirón, Joe Willock and Bruno Guimarães drop to the bench following the goalless draw at Arsenal. Fabian Schär, Callum Wilson and Nick Pope all drop out of the squad altogether and Allan Saint-Maximin is also not involved for Eddie Howe’s men.

For the hosts, it’s just two changes: Callum Paterson and Mallik Wilks are out with Fisayo Dele-Bashiru and Dominic Iorfa coming in.

Sheffield Wednesday: Dawson, Palmer, Iorfa, McGuinness, James, Johnson, Dele-Bashiru, Byers, Vaulks, Windass, Smith. Substitutes: Stockdale, Hunt, Famewo, Brown, Bakinson, Adeniran, Mighten, Paterson, Wilks

Newcastle: Dubravka, Manquillo, Lascelles, Botman, Lewis, Longstaff, Anderson, Joelinton, Ritchie, Murphy, Isak. Substitutes: Darlow, Trippier, Dummett, Wood, Fraser, Almirón, Willock, Burn, Bruno Guimarães

A couple of match reports from earlier – Harry Kane edged Tottenham past Portsmouth, and Kelechi Iheanacho did the same thing for Leicester at Gillingham:

Updated

In the 3pm kick-offs, Chesterfield have just been denied at the last in a 3-3 thriller against West Brom, who equalised in stoppage time. Blackpool, meanwhile, have lifted the gloom at Bloomfield Road with a 4-1 drubbing of Nottingham Forest.

Sarah Rendell has all the details here in our clockwatch:

Updated

Preamble

This evening’s televised tie looks a strong candidate for a good, old-fashioned FA Cup giant-killing to throw on today’s pile. Sheffield Wednesday are buoyant, unbeaten in 13 matches, sitting second in League One with just three defeats this season. A Josh Windass hat-trick helped them to a dominant 5-0 victory against Cambridge five days ago.

Newcastle aren’t going badly either, of course, flying high in third place in the Premier League and coming off the back of a goalless draw at table-topping Arsenal in north London just four days ago. The manager Eddie Howe will doubtless shuffle his pack tonight, but has insisted: “We want to win the game and want to go through.”

Let’s find out who earns a place in the hat for the fourth round, then. Team news and other good stuff will be coming right up.
