Paul Heckingbottom is a relieved man after Sander Berge committed his immediate future to Sheffield United. It was the Blades’ manager who spilled the beans on the Norweigan’s possible exit last weekend.
After their 3-3 draw with National League side Wrexham, Heckingbottom was quizzed about Berge’s omission from the squad. The pre-match news was surprising as the 24-year-old has been one of his star performers over the last 18 months.
As it turned out, Bramall Lane chiefs asked Heckingbottom to leave Berge out of the squad due to interest from other clubs. Newcastle United were understood to be one of those monitoring the situation.

Jonjo Shelvey’s surprise exit to Nottingham Forest left Eddie Howe light in midfield but a loan deal for Berge was not an option. Bruno Guimaraes’ three-match suspension also escalates the problem, with Joelinton, Sean Longstaff and Joe Willock the only available midfielders.
Speaking ahead of the Blades’ clash against Rotherham United, Heckingbottom admitted Berge is delighted to be staying put. He said: "There was interest and bids and I know they (Berge and Ndiaye) could have been sold, but they weren't. I said all along at Wrexham that Sander wasn't there because there was speculation.
‘I was still hopeful he wouldn't go. I didn't want him to go and Sander is comfortable. Sander is delighted he is still here. I am pleased and grateful we have kept the players."
