Shawhead Primary youngsters clean up in litter campaign

Youngsters at Shawhead Primary have cleaned up.

Keep Scotland Beautiful ran a litter league competition for schools as part of their Spring Clean Campaign.

And pupils at Shawhead Primary topped the south of Scotland chart, with Leswalt and Kirkcolm rounding out the top three.

Head teacher, Karen Little, said: “I am really proud of our wee school for becoming the Litter League regional champions.

“As an eco-school, and as proud holders of seven Green Flags, looking after our environment is built into our curriculum and our way of life.

“The children at the school work hard to keep our local area clean and litter-free all year. It is so lovely that their work has been recognised.”

Keep Scotland Beautiful campaign co-ordinator, Heather McLaughlin, said: “This first year of our Litter League has proved to be a tremendous success.

“We have seen thousands of young people get involved from across the country to help us clean up Scotland.

“Litter League has proven that no matter your age, size or how many people are on your team, it is possible to have a positive impact and contribute to keeping Scotland beautiful.

“I want to thank every single participant who got involved and say a huge congratulations to all our winners.”

The campaign aimed to get kids to take part in litter picking while learning about the impact such tasks have on tackling climate change, reducing litter and protecting nature.

Schools, youth groups and nurseries competed against each other, with pupils donning hi-vis jackets and grabbing their litter pickers to take part.
