Shaun Maloney 'set' for Wigan job as former Hibs boss a frontrunner to replace ex-Celtic star

Shaun Maloney is the frontrunner to take over at Wigan Athletic after former Celtic star Kolo Toure was booted out the door following just two months in charge.

A run of nine games without a victory in all competitions has found Toure abruptly end to his spell as manager at the DW Stadium. The former Celtic and Manchester City defender was in the Wigan dugout for just nine games and failed to record a win.

Now Wigan Today say that the crisis club are set to turn to Maloney who is highly revered among their supporters after four very successful years as a player that included the sensational FA Cup triumph over Manchester City in 2013. It would be the young manager's second full managerial post after the failed experiment at Hibs.

The former Celtic and Scotland star had a difficult spell at Easter Road after he took over from Jack Ross ahead of the League Cup Final, bringing in fellow former Parkhead and national team mate Gary Caldwell.

He left his post as Belgium assistant manager to succeed Jack Ross and won his first two matches in charge against Aberdeen and Dundee United. However, back to back defeats by Hearts in April last year forced the board to act. He was only in charge at Easter Road for 19 matches, winning six and losing seven.

Maloney was interviewed for the hot seat before Toure's appointment and impressed officials at the club. The local outlet reports that he "will be handed control of the rebuild" and the bid to avoid relegation to League One.
