Sharon Stone has encouraged women to always "get a second opinion" from doctors after receiving a misdiagnosis that turned out to be a "large fibroid tumour."

On Tuesday, the actress took to her Instagram Stories to share that the medical mishap had her undergo surgery she shouldn’t have had.

She explained how she realised something was wrong after the first operation as things were not getting any better.

"As the pain got worse, I went for a second opinion," she revealed, admitting to being shocked when she discovered that "I have a large fibroid tumour that needs to be removed".

Stone shared news of her misdiagnosis and tumour on Instagram (instagram)

She then urged her followers to never settle for a first medical opinion.

She warned: "Ladies in particular: Don’t get blown off. GET A SECOND OPINION. It can save your life.

"I’ll be down for 4-6 weeks for full recovery. Thx for your care. It’s all good."

The star showed that she’s soldiering through it by stating: "Thank you for your attention. All is well," next to an emoji of a muscular arm.

The Basic Instinct star has suffered a series of health problems over the years.

Last year she revealed in her memoir, The Beauty of Living Twice, that in 2001 doctors had to remove benign tumours from her body that were "gigantic, bigger than my breast alone."

However, when she recovered from the surgery she realised she had been given larger breast implants without her knowledge.

"When I was unbandaged, I discovered that I had a full cup-size bigger breasts, ones that he said ‘go better with your hip size,’" she wrote.

"He had changed my body without my knowledge or consent."

She also wrote about her 2001 stroke and cerebral haemorrhage she suffered at age 43.
