It has been 30 years since Stephen Lawrence was killed in a racist attack as he made his way home with a friend in South East London. The response from the police was found to have been marred by institutional racism and a failure of leadership. The campaigning led by Lawrence’s family and activists led to profound and lasting impact on attitudes to race in Britain.
The Guardian is keen to speak to young people, particularly those from Black African and Black Caribbean backgrounds, who were young when Lawrence was killed, to ask what impact his death and the inquiry into the metropolitan police had on them growing up in Britain; and what thoughts they have on the 30th anniversary of his racist murder.
We would also like to hear from people, particularly those from Black African and Black Caribbean backgrounds, who were around the same age as Lawrence when he was killed to also ask what impact his death and the public reckoning that followed had on their attitudes of race in Britain.
