UNIVERSITY of Newcastle students, staff and alumni came together on Wednesday, September 18 for its third annual Gifting Day.

Through donations, volunteering and ambassadors, the event is aimed at making a collective impact through kindness for six different causes.

The last two gifting days have raised over $550,000 and this year the university was hoping to add another $200,000 to that sum.

UON executive director advancement Rebecca Hazell said gifting day was a "really special day" in the university's calendar.

"It's celebrating kindness and generosity in the difference that it can make to others and we do that through inviting people to volunteer their time to be ambassadors for gifting day and champion a particular cause that they're really passionate about," she said.

This year's project causes were Walking alongside student survivors of gender-based violence, Speech Pathology for rural and regional children, The Science and Engineering challenge, The Scholarship for Asylum Seekers program, the Alumni and Community House and the 2NURFM Community Radio Station.

Ms Hazell said many people from across the university donated to support the causes including people from across the globe.

"This year we planned to engage another 1000 people around the world and to think about collective impact and particularly impact that's taking place in our communities here in our region," she said.

"Thank you to everybody that gets involved. It's a really wonderful thing to see the community come together to do things together for each other."
