What’s new: Shanghai has reintroduced citywide high frequency Covid testing in a push to clear positive cases at community level “as early as possible,” according to the local government, after two districts reported no additional infections on Thursday.
Starting on Friday, residents confined to their homes have to take daily nucleic acid tests (NATs), while residents who are only confined to the premises of their communities will be subject to two days of NATs and three days of antigen tests, the local government said in a statement, without elaboration on when the Covid testing drive would end.
Why it matters: Among Shanghai’s 16 districts, the two suburban districts of Jinshan and Chongming reported no new Covid-19 infections on Thursday, suggesting the current local outbreak is on a downward trend.
New Covid infections in other five districts, including Pudong, Minhang, Songjiang, Qingpu and Putuo, have continued to fall in the last three days, the local government said at a press conference Thursday.
