What’s new: The Shanghai municipal government approved a second batch of companies to resume production as most parts of the city still remained under lockdown amid omicron flare-ups.
Companies in semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals, mechanics and logistics make up a large portion of the city’s second list of businesses to restart operations.
It is unclear how many companies are on the latest list as the resumption orders were distributed by each of the city’s districts. In the Pudong New District alone, 342 companies were granted approval.
Telecom giant Huawei Technologies, chipmaker Unisoc, leading courier YTO Express Group Co., Dow Chemical Co. and Panasonic Holdings Corp. are among those on the list.
The background: Shanghai issued its first list of 666 companies that could potentially resume operations nearly two weeks ago when the city entered its fourth week of Covid-19 lockdowns.
Two-fifths of the companies on the initial list were in the automotive sector, including electric-car maker Tesla Inc. and SAIC Volkswagen Automotive Co. Ltd.
Companies on the list can move forward to resume production with closed-loop management, in which workers live at workplaces largely segregated from the general population and take regular tests, to put infection risks under control, according to the Shanghai government.
Companies can submit their resumption applications to the city government for review.
