The Indianapolis Colts won’t be back together on the field again until the end of July when training camp arrives, but head coach Shane Steichen feels optimistic about the progress of rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson.
Even though the No. 4 overall pick was splitting reps with veteran Gardner Minshew for the majority of the spring, Steichen told the media at minicamp this week that he’s pleased with the developments being made.
“Yeah, I am. Obviously, we’ll get pads on in training camp to get the real rush, the real feel and all that stuff. But pleased with where he is at, grasping the offense,” Steichen said.
Richardson hasn’t been shy about making it known he’s willing to learn. His eagerness and desperation to know everything about the offense is what gives him the chance to reach an incredibly high ceiling.
Even putting him through some high-leverage situations during the spring workouts gave Richardson the chance to adapt and adjust to NFL speed before entering training camp.
“I think this week we installed a lot of things during the offseason. It was all in this week. It was unscripted periods and call-it periods, and going from there – stuff that might’ve not been scripted over the last two weeks showed up today in the call-it period. It’s good – stress the mind on everybody and see where everyone is at,” Steichen said.
For Richardson himself, he understands the process isn’t one that will happen overnight.
“The main thing when it comes to that is finding a routine, finding my place in the building, finding what I need to work on, getting advice from the vets and just understand what they want from me,” Richardson said at minicamp. “Sometimes I have to remember that I am a rookie and I don’t know everything and I have to trust the process. It’s just a matter of getting the information, being myself and finding my routine.”
We’ll see what training camp and the preseason have in store for Richardson and the Colts as that will be the true test of how far away he is from claiming the starting role.
