Shane McEntee hits out at social media users for abuse following father's departure from Meath job

Shane McEntee has hit back at GAA fans who abused his father, Andy, after he departed the Meath footballer's job.

It was announced on Monday that Andy McEntee would depart the job following six years in charge of the Royals.

A barrage of criticism of McEntee ensued on social media following the announcement, including suggestions that his son should not have been on the county panel.

Furthermore, [Shane] McEntee took his opportunity to deny rumours that Meath GAA had shelled out €4,000 in order to fly him back for May's Leinster final loss against Dublin.

In his role as a lieutenant in the Irish Defence Forces, Shane McEntee left Ireland for a tour of Mali in March.

His return coincided with the Royals' comprehensive loss against the Dubs, but in a Twitter post he vehemently denied rumours that Meath GAA had paid for his flights.

He said: "Flights cost €1k and I paid for them.

"I then paid another €500 to change it and make an extra training.

"Online abuse, letters to the house.

"You can put yourself forward for these roles or you can tweet about it, one takes a bit more conviction."

Following defeat in Leinster against Dublin, Meath looked to resurrect their campaign as they faced Clare in Round One of the All-Ireland Qualifiers last weekend.

However, they slumped to a two-point defeat against the Banner, and on Monday a statement was released via the county board which outlined that Andy McEntee would vacate his post as manager.

The statement read: "After completing 6 years as manager of the Meath Football team, I am stepping down from the position and will not be seeking a third term.

"It has been an honour to have been manager of the Meath Senior Football team and I’d like to thank the Chairperson of Coiste na Mí, John Kavanagh and former chairpersons Peter O’Halloran and Conor Tormey for their full support during my tenure.

"But most of all I’d like to thank all the players and management teams that I have worked with over the years. I wish the county every success in the future."
