Shamrock Rovers will kick off their title defence against UCD behind closed doors after they were handed a one-game stadium ban by the FAI.
The Hoops will play their first game of the season without a crowd following an incident at last October’s league meeting with Waterford.
Two fans were arrested when a firework was set off from the stand during the first half and caused a safety incident for players and supporters in the ground.
A repeater firework sent debris raining down on the pitch, some of which struck Waterford player Andrew Wordsworth and forced the game to be temporarily halted.
The incident soured what was an otherwise triumphant occasion for Rovers as they were afforded a guard of honour by the Blues after sealing the title before the 3-1 win.
Shamrock Rovers condemned the behaviour of those responsible and issued indefinite bans from Tallaght Stadium but the FAI decided further action was necessary.
"Shamrock Rovers F.C. unequivocally condemns the actions of two 'so called' supporters,” Rovers wrote in a statement at the time.
"The two individuals were arrested by Gardaí at the scene and taken from the ground. The club will cooperate fully with the Gardaí on any follow-up matters and will also be issuing indefinite bans from attending Tallaght Stadium to the people concerned.
"It is regrettable that the actions of two individuals caused reputational damage to the club and was not reflective of the atmosphere and support from the large away crowd of over 350 Hoops fans who supported the team throughout, enjoying a 3-1 away win."
The news comes as the government are set to remove restrictions on capacity at sporting events next month.
Temporarily regulations brought in last month in response to the Omicron wave limited attendance at outdoor events to 50% of capacity or a maximum of 5,000.
The Hoops are yet to issue a statement in response to the ban but it is understood they are exploring avenues of appeal.
“It is not right - it is unacceptable and should never happen in a football ground," manager Stephen Bradley told extraime.com following the game.
"Of all of our fans tonight, the hundreds of fans, it is one idiot that has caused all the commotion and put people in danger. The rest of the fans had nothing to do with it.”
