Shamal George admits there was no chance of him reaching James Tavernier’s fabulous free-kick.
But the Livingston keeper fully believes a European slot is within touching distance for Davie Martindale’s men. For the second time this season, George found himself flailing as a Tavernier set-piece soared past him during Rangers’ comfortable 3-0 win at the Tony Macaroni Arena.
The Ibrox skipper swept home into the postage-stamp corner to give Gers the win on the opening day of the season and repeated the trick on Saturday, this time swinging over the wall into the opposite side. But George reckons his side should have known better than to allow the Ibrox skipper to pick his spot having been pre-warned. The Livi No.1 said: “He’s done it twice now against me with two free-kicks. Ridiculous. That’s why he’s one of the best with dead-balls in the league.
“I can’t really explain how good he is. The manager spoke to us before the game. You’ve also got Borna Barisic – with the left foot – then Tavernier who’s got a wand of a right foot.
“So, there’s danger all over the pitch against Rangers. It’s a tough one to take.
“I stood in the middle of the goal to cover each side and he still put it in the top corner. You can’t do much about that.
You can’t properly explain how good the free-kick was. You take your hat off to him – he’s a great player.”
The defeat drops Livi out of the European slots down to sixth but George is refusing to panic. The summer signing from Colchester added: “We’re sixth now but we’ve got a game in hand on Aberdeen which is a big game we need to win.
“We can definitely achieve what we set out to do, top six and aim for Europe. That’s on the cards just now and it’s what we need to focus on with the games ahead. It would be a great achievement for myself and the team. It’s what I’m hoping for.”
