Shakira thought it was ‘Till death do us part’ for her and ex Gerard Piqué

Shakira thought she and longtime partner Gerard Piqué would never split.

The singer whose 11 year relationship with the former football star ended in June of 2022 said she believed it was a case "’till death do us part" for her and Pique in a new interview.

"My priority was my home, my family," she told billboard magazine. "I believed in ‘till death do us part.’ I believed that dream, and I had that dream for myself, for my children.

"My parents have been together, I don’t know, 50 years, and they love each other like the first day, with a love that’s unique and unrepeatable. So I know it’s possible."

It’s what I wanted for myself and my children, but it didn’t happen," Shakira continued.

The Hips Don’t Lie singer explained that she "dedicated" herself to the Spanish footballer during their romance often at the expense of her career.

"I was dedicated to him," she told the publication. "To the family, to him. It was very difficult for me to attend to my professional career while in Barcelona.

"It was complicated logistically to get a collaborator there," said Shakira, who moved to Spain for Pique and since the split has moved to Florida. "I had to wait for agendas to coincide or for someone to come.

"I couldn’t leave my children and just go somewhere to make music outside my house. It was hard to maintain the rhythm."

Now, the star is able to work freely, which she says is due to her location change.

"Something inescapable about Miami, Los Angeles, the US in general is I have the logistical and technical support, the resources, the tools, the people. Living in Spain, all that was on hold," she added.

Pique flaunted his romance with Clara Chia Marti (bith pictured) on Instagram earlier this year (Gerard Pique/Intagram)

Shakira, who shares sons Milan, 10, and Sasha, seven, with Piqué, previously told journalist Enrique Acevedo: “I’ve always been very emotionally dependent [on men] – I have to confess this.”

"I was in love with love. One way or another, I’ve managed to learn it from another perspective and feel that I’ll be fine on my own.”

She continued: “When a woman has to face [hardships] in life, she comes out stronger. When you come out stronger it means you’re learning to recognize your weaknesses and accept your vulnerability.”

The singer, 46, and retired professional footballer, 36, shocked fans when they announced that they were calling time on their relationship last year.

Former Spain and Barcelona defender Piqué has made no secret of the fact that he has since moved on with Clara Chia Marti, 23, reportedly a PR Student who works at Kosmos, Piqué’s sports and entertainment production company, and assists with event organising, which is believed to be how they met.
