Shakira has left the home she formerly shared with Gerard Piqué in Barcelona for a new life in Miami.
The Colombian singer, 46, bade an emotional farewell to the Spanish city she had called home on Sunday as she headed Stateside with her and retired professional footballer Piqué’s two sons Milan, 10, and Sasha, eight.
Shakira and Piqué announced last May that they were splitting after 11 years together. He has since moved on with 24-year-old Clara Chia Marti.
While Shakira’s plan to relocate had been no secret, the speed at which it came surprised many.
Reports in Spanish media claim the Hips Don’t Lie hitmaker received an “eviction notice” from Piqué’s dad Joan Piqué on March 13 asking her to vacate the former couple’s home by April 30 or pay compensation.
The letter is believed to have arrived after Shakira performed her diss song BRZP Music Sessions #53, which takes aim at Piqué and his new girlfriend on Jimmy Fallon’s late night US talk show.
Shakira posted an emotional message on Instagram as she left her old life behind, writing: “I settled in Barcelona to give my sons stability, the same stability that we are now looking for in another corner of the world next to family, friends and the sea.
“Today we begin a new chapter in the search for their happiness. Thanks to everyone who surfed so many waves with me there in Barcelona, the city where I learned friendship is undoubtedly longer than love.
“Thanks to everyone there who encouraged me, dried my tears, inspired me and made me grow.
“Thanks to my Spanish fans who have always protected me with their love and loyalty.”
She went on to share a photo of a wing of the plane she left the Catalan capital on with Barcelona below it and added: “But things are not always how we dreamed them.
“At times we run but we don’t arrive. Never doubt that I’m going to be here.”
The Standard has contacted representatives for Shakira and Gerard Piqué for comment.
