Shaftesbury Youth Club is looking to raise money for a new pavilion and 3G pitch.
The Wirral club has been running since 1886 and is aiming to secure £20,000 to build a 3G 11 v 11 all weather pitch, renovate the old pavilion and build a new community space.
The venue has provided services to local young people and their families for more than 130 years, making it the second oldest youth club in England. Its mission is to inspire young people to achieve their potential.
Chairman Barry Eaton said: “The club has lost a significant amount of funding this year due to Wirral Council cutbacks. The new 3G football pitch should bring in extra revenues to make up some of the shortfalls.
“The new pavilion will also be used for community projects as it has a new and extended kitchen. We have also opened up a social supermarket for the local community to raise more funds.”
The fundraiser is due to the costs of running the Birkenhead centre skyrocketing. There has been less investment, in part due to fewer grants being available for the upkeep of facilities.
The youth club aims to work with children, young people and families of Wirral. Open seven days a week, it delivers numerous community and education programmes. These cover sports participation, youth and community engagement, social education, health and emotional well-being.
The new project will rectify all current issues such as general repairs, allowing men and women to use it as the same time and make it accessible for wheelchair users. Furthermore, over the past few years the club has suffered due to an increase in rainfall which has impacted the pitches and therefore income.
The new pitch and upgraded pavilion will seek to solve these problems and provide significant benefits. The facilities will help grow the impact of the charity and strengthen its relationship with the local community.
