Labour is on the brink of civil war as party chiefs consider blocking a bid by Andy Burnham to return to Parliament.

The party’s ruling National Executive Committee is meeting on Sunday to decide whether to allow Greater Manchester mayor Mr Burnham to seek to become Labour’s candidate for the Gorton and Denton by-election.
