Sevilla star has theory after feeling 'fear' of Manchester United's players

Sevilla midfielder Nemanja Gudelj believes his side would have found a winning third goal in last week’s 2-2 Europa League quarter-final first-leg draw with Manchester United if the match was played for an extra five minutes.

Two late own-goals from Tyrell Malacia and Harry Maguire saw the visitors wipe out Marcel Sabitzer’s 21-minute brace as United suffered a number of casualties including Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez, the latter of whom is now out for the rest of the season.

The Reds also travel to Seville without the suspended Bruno Fernandes who harshly received his third yellow card of the competition during the first leg, meaning he is required to serve a one-game ban.

Casemiro and Facundo Pellistri walk the same tightrope for the clash in Spain ahead of a possible semi-final.

United will be determined to put in a solid showing at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium after faltering late on in the first leg. However, Sevilla's players have come out fighting this week, insisting that the visitors are in for a tough time.

Gudelj is among the players to have voiced his confidence and told a pre-match press conference that his club might have taken a lead back to Spain if there had been more time on the clock given the “fear” he sensed from the hosts.

He said: “I don’t think it mattered if an injured played got out, we felt on the pitch like we were close to scoring the goal. After the first one you felt the fear of Manchester going more back.

“Physically, they couldn’t bring what they brought in the beginning of the match and for us that was the opportunity to go for the second. Even the third - in my opinion, if the game was five minutes more we would have scored the third one.”

Erik ten Hag confirmed on Wednesday that Marcus Rashford, Luke Shaw, Marcel Sabitzer and Tyrell Malacia are available for selection after missing Sunday’s 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest.
