Sevilla chief takes thinly-veiled swipe at Man Utd over Anthony Martial treatment

Sevilla 's director of football has hinted that Manchester United did not treat Anthony Martial properly during his time at Old Trafford.

Martial joined the Spanish side on loan in the January transfer window and has started strongly, notably registering an assist and winning Man of the Match in his second appearance after a quiet debut.

The 26-year-old's form has contrasted his final days as a Red Devils player, in which he struggled to provide under both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick.

And that has led Monchi - full name Ramon Rodriguez Verdejo - to suggest that United made a misstep in taking care of Martial.

"In these two weeks he's been here, what I see is happiness," Monchi told The Times. "When a player has the technical, tactical, physical qualities, what you have to do is touch the perfect spot for these qualities to reappear.

"And we think we're capable of finding this spot. Possibly it could mean more affection, more support, more trust; speaking more to him, for his family to feel settled, for him to feel important. There's not one model for every player – everyone has their needs."

While Monchi is behind Sevilla's transfer business, manager Julen Lopetegui hopes to get the best out of the on-loan striker by using him in multiple attacking positions during his five-month spell.

"He is a player who, like [Jesus] Corona, must have a great adaptation and demand over time," Lopetegui explained.

"I think he has played a good game, he has helped us in different positions. I think he can play both in a 4-3-3 for outside, as the only striker or as a second striker. He has that ability."

Martial was a man in demand last month, with the Frenchman revealing he had spoken to European giants Juventus and Barcelona before ultimately deciding on a move to La Liga.

"It's true, Juventus tried to sign me," Martial told reporters, via Football Italia. "They were talking to my agent but I told him that I preferred Sevilla. It was the best option for my family and me.

"Barcelona held talks with my agent as well, but once again, I said that my priority was Sevilla. I didn't change my mind. I always keep my word when I say something to somebody."
