Severn Trent outlines how people can 'use water wisely' in driest summer since 1911

Severn Trent is cautioning people to be careful when it comes to using water and be mindful that it is the driest summer on record since 1911. It comes as a leaked document shows that the water company has not denied it may be considering a hosepipe ban.

The weather in Nottingham and across the UK is soaring with temperatures reaching a high of 32 degrees on Monday, August 15. Severn Trent has asked that people use water wisely as demand increases and have outlined some ways that customers can cut their water usage.

Some of the measures recommended by Severn Trent include:

  • Keep hydrated
  • Have a shower rather than a bath
  • Use a bucket and sponge rather than a hose to clean your car
  • Look for leaking loos and get them fixed
  • Turn off taps when not in use
  • When it’s time to empty the paddling pool use the water to water your plants
  • Water plants in the evening with a watering can – it’ll be more effective as less water will evaporate

Although the hot weather is set to continue throughout the weekend, there is some rain forecast for next week starting on Monday with a mix of wet and sunny spells. However, drought is expected to be forecast tomorrow in some parts of the UK including the South.

A Severn Trent spokesperson said: “Our region has seen a dry start to the year, only seeing 67% of the rainfall usually expected between April to June 2022. However, there hasn’t been a hosepipe ban in our region for more than 27 years (since 1995), and as we do every year, we continue to monitor reservoir levels and demand for water closely.

“We’d like to thank all of our customers for their support in being mindful about non-essential water use as the warm and dry weather continues into the summer.”
