Severn Bridge still closed but M4 Prince of Wales Bridge open as Storm Franklin hits

The M4 Prince of Wales Bridge is open in both directions today (February 21) while the M48 Severn Bridge remains closed for the fourth day in a row.

In a tweet this morning, The Severn Bridges' Twitter account posted: "Good morning! #M48 #SevernBridge is still closed in both directions. We are seeing gusts of 50mph, which means it's still unsafe to open at this time.

"#M4 #PrinceOfWalesBridge is open in both directions. Please monitor http://ow.ly/CLY950HZQ6j or @2SevernBridges for updates."

The bridge was first closed due to severe wind gusts from Storm Eunice, with gusts reaching up to around 64mph in parts of Bristol and the surrounding area.

The Prince of Wales Bridge reopened on Friday, with the storm supposed to ease up after 9pm.

Now it seems, with Storm Franklin now here, the bad weather is only set to continue and so it has been decided that the Severn Bridge will remain closed.

A yellow weather warning has been issued for Bristol, set to run until 1pm today and the Severn Estuary at Severn Beach this morning issued a 'be prepared' flood alert due to the wind coinciding with spring tides, expected to create yet another 'tidal surge'.
