'Severe pain' - Anthony Gordon makes Everton penalty claim and dismisses 'diving' Liverpool decision

Anthony Gordon believes he should have had a penalty in the Merseyside derby on Sunday. Liverpool eventually ran out 2-0 winners over Everton at Anfield with goals from Andrew Robertson and Divock Origi helping them over the line.

The defeat leaves the Toffees in the bottom three and in serious relegation trouble as Burnley beat Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier in the day. However, they will consider themselves unlucky not to have taken a point from the game, as a number of refereeing decisions seemingly went against them.

Liverpool striker Sadio Mane was fortunate not to see red before half-time after a push in Allan's face and a poke in the eye of Mason Holgate. After the break, Everton winger Gordon then scampered forward into the penalty area on the counter attack and was seemingly brought down by Joel Matip.

Referee Stuart Attwell decided not to award a penalty, though, and a VAR review deemed there was no infraction.

"We should have had a penalty in my view," said Gordon at full-time on Sky Sports. "Sometimes they just go against you and that's how football is at times."

The Everton winger also took to social media and posted the clip of the challenge from Matip, accompanied by a facepalming emoji.

Gordon was booked for diving in the box in the first half but believes the referee should have pointed to the spot after the incident in the second half.

"The second one for me was the strongest," he added. "Because he stood on my foot. I've gone one v one with him and I've got the better of him and he's stood on my foot, which has caused me severe pain and I've gone down.

"The first one I've watched back. I felt the contact and went down. From a few angles I can see why he hasn't give it, but [it's] certainly not a yellow card. It's not a dive, there is contact."
