Severance season 2 shoots to top of most anticipated 2025 TV shows with premiere announcement

Adam Scott in Severance.

If it feels like forever since Severance was the talk of TV fans everywhere, that's because it pretty much has been. The Apple TV Plus original debuted in February 2022, with its shocking season 1 finale airing that April. Well, the long wait to see what happens to Mark, Helly, Irving and Dylan is almost over, as Apple has officially confirmed that Severance season 2 is going to premiere on January 17, 2025.

The news came via a date announcement video that also gives us our best look yet at season 2, which according to Apple TV will see Mark and his friends "learn the dire consequences of trifling with the severance barrier, leading them further down a path of woe."

While there was some hope that Severance season 2 may sneak into the 2024 TV calendar, it immediately becomes one of the most anticipated TV shows of 2025, as the nearly three-year wait to find out what happens after those major cliffhangers will finally be revealed and new mysteries around the ominous Lumon are sure to be explored. We thankfully won't have to wait long for in the new year. The January 17 premiere will feature one episode, with one episode then releasing every Friday on the streaming service, with 10 episodes in total for season 2 (one more than season 1).

The main cast of Severance are all back for season 2, including Adam Scott, Britt Lower, Tramell Tillman, Zach Cherry, Jen Tullock, Michael Chernus, Dichen Lachman, John Turturro, Christopher Walken and Patricia Arquette. Lead creatives Ben Stiller and Dan Erickson are also back, with Stiller directing five episodes in the new season.

As far as new additions to the show, Apple confirmed that Sarah Bock (Bruiser) has joined the cast as a series regular. Other names that have been reported as joining the cast include Bob Balaban, Robby Benson, Stefano Carannate, Gwendoline Christie, John Noble, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Alia Shawkat and Merritt Weaver.

The first season of Severance was critically acclaimed (it was "Certified Fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes with a score of 97% positive) and received its fair share of awards, earning 14 Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series and four acting noms (Scott, Arquette, Turturro, Walken) and winning two.

In case you need a reminder of what Severance is about, here is the official synopsis:

"Mark Scout (Scott) leads a team at Lumon Industries, whose employees have undergone a severance procedure that surgically divides their memories between their work and personal lives. This daring experiment in "work-life balance" is called into question as Mark finds himself at the center of an unraveling mystery that will force him to confront the true nature of his work… and of himself."

Before Severance season 2 arrives, you can catch up with the entire first season of the show exclusively on Apple TV Plus. In the meantime, check out the date announcement video right here:
