Seven powerful Russian figures who have died since Vladimir Putin launched Ukraine invasion

A Russian businessman has become the latest figure to have died following the invasion of Ukraine in February.

Ravil Maganov, 67, reportedly fell from the sixth-floor of the Central Clinical Hospital on Thursday. He was the second Lukoil board member, Russia’s second-largest oil-producer, to have died recent months.

In March, the company had called for an immediate end to the conflict and “expresses its concern over the ongoing tragic events in Ukraine and its deepest sympathy to all those affected by this tragedy”.

Although Russian forces were thought to possessa large military advantage at the beginning of the conflict, Vladimir Putin’s troops have failed to make substantial gains in Ukraine.

Due to the stalled invasion, Putin has replaced several military officials including Aleksandr Vladimirovich Dvornikov, who had been charged with overall command of the operation in Ukraine and general-colonel Aleksandr Zhuravlev, who had commanded Russia’s Western Military District since 2018, according to the Ministry of Defence.

Here are the Russian businessmen who have died:

Alexander Tyulyakov

A day after the invasion on February 25, Alexander Tyulyakov, 61, was found dead in his home.

Mr Tyulyakov, who was Gazprom’s deputy general director of the Unified Settlement Center (UCC) for Corporate Security, was found in the garage of his home in St Petersburg with investigators claiming he had committed suicide.

Mikhail Watford

Mikhail Watford, 66, who was born in Soviet Ukraine, made his fortune in oil refineries and was discovered dead at his £18million mansion on the Wentworth estate, in Virginia Water, Surrey, on February 28.

The businessman was discovered by his gardener in his garage, although the police did not treat his death as suspicious, the BBC reported at the time.

Vasily Melnikov

Russian newspaper Kommersant reported that the businessman who worked for MedStom was found dead in his luxury apartment Nizhny Novgorod.

Investigators at the time concluded that the businessman killed his 41-year-old wife and two children before killing himself on March 23.

Vladislav Avayev

Vladislav Avayev, 51, a former Kremlin official and vice-president of the Gazprombank, was found dead in his penthouse apartment in Moscow on April 18.

According to reports, the former Gazprombank official committed suicide after killing his wife, Yelena, 47, and 13-year-old daughter, Maria.

Sergey Protosenya

On April 26, the 55-year-old Russian millionaire was found dead alongside his wife Natalya, 53 and 18-year-old daughter Maria, at their luxury Spanish villa on the Costa Brava.

Catalan Police claimed Mr Protosenya killed his his wife and child before then killing himself.

Alexander Subbotin

The former executive with Lukoil was found dead at the basement of his home in Mytishchi on May 9.

According to Russian media reports, the billionaire businessman who ran a shipping company, died of a heart attack and was found by shamans, local media reported.
