Seven people treated after Welsh school evacuated amid reports of 'chemical spill'

A secondary school was evacuated on Monday amid reports of a chemical spill. North Wales Police, North Wales Fire and Rescue and Welsh Ambulance Service attended Ysgol Syr Hugh Owen in Caernarfon shortly before midday on Monday, May 9.

Pupils were reportedly removed from the building as police confirmed they were called to reports of a "chemical release". Gwynedd Council has said no-one was injured, however, Wales Ambulance Service said seven patients were treated on scene, North Wales Live reports. No-one required hospital treatment.

Gwynedd Council said today's incident was sparked when a bottle fell and broke. A spokesperson said: "Following an incident this morning where a bottle of chemical fell and broke in the chemical storage at Ysgol Syr Hugh Owen, the school was evacuated and the emergency services contacted. This was in accordance with specialist advice.

"Nobody was injured and every measure followed to ensure the safety of all pupils and staff. An ambulance was called as a precautionary measure. Part of the school building remains closed and some pupils went home early today as it was unlikely that it would be possible to use the main building during the school day. We are grateful to the school’s staff for their work in making the site safe and to our emergency services partners for their support.

Police confirmed their attendance at the Gwynedd secondary school. A spokesperson said: "North Wales Police received reports of a chemical release at just after 11.50am. Officers have attended to assist with traffic management whilst the scene is being commanded by the fire service."

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service also confirmed they were called to the school at 11.26am to reports of a "chemical spill" but this was contained. A NWFRS spokesperson said: "We were called to the school at 11.26 to reports of a chemical spill – however, the chemical had been made safe by school staff prior to our arrival and no further action was required. Advice was issued by fire staff to personnel on site."

An ambulance spokesperson confirmed that whilst several people were treated on scene, no-one was taken to hospital. The incident was resolved at just before 3pm. Wales Ambulance Service said: "We were called to support colleagues in the fire service to reports of an incident involving chemicals at a school in Caernarfon at 11.32am today, Monday, May 9. We attended with one rapid response vehicle and one emergency ambulance. Seven patients were treated on scene but nobody required conveyance to hospital."
