Sergio Reguilon's Tottenham contract and buyback clause explained as Real Madrid plot transfer

Sergio Reguilon has become a firm fans' favourite at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium since his £28million move from Real Madrid in the summer of 2020.

The left-back has been utilised in the wing-back position under Antonio Conte, getting up in support of the front men when Spurs attack.

His move to N17 went a little bit under the radar, given he joined the club at the same time as his Real Madrid team-mate and Tottenham prodigal son Gareth Bale.

But from Tottenham's point of view, it was something of a transfer coup. The club were not planning on signing a left-back that summer, but when Reguilon became available at a good price, they made their move.

However, Real Madrid were not going to let him go without a fight, and in letting him move to Spurs, Los Blancos made sure there was a buyback clause in his deal, something Spurs are reluctant to do normally.

And now Real Madrid have shown an interest in bringing Reguilon back to the Bernabeu, the Tottenham fans will be worried about losing their marauding Spanish wing-back, with concern over just what Real's transfer interest could mean.

According to El Nacional, Carlo Ancelotti wants to bring Reguilon back to the Spanish capital in the summer transfer window after suffering in that position this season due to injuries to Ferland Mendy and Dani Carvajal.

But what does that mean for Spurs?

Reguilon signed a five-year contract with the north London club in 2020, tying him to N17 until 2025.

However, there is that buyback clause that Real Madrid have. football.london understands that the clause stated that Real can buy Reguilon back in either the summer of 2021 or 2022, with Spurs making a healthy profit of around £15million.

The transfer would cost Real Madrid around £43million to complete, but they must make their move this summer, otherwise that buyback clause terminates.

Reguilon must of course agree to such a move should Real return for him and the hope within Tottenham is that if he is happy and settled in the Premier League he would have no reason to return to Spain.
