Sergio Perez wags finger in disgust as Lewis Hamilton jeered by Mexican GP fans ‘all day’

Mexican driver Sergio Perez wagged his finger in disgust as fans booed and jeered his rival Lewis Hamilton after the Mexican Grand Prix.

It was another great day for Red Bull with world champion Max Verstappen taking victory and home favourite Perez placing third, with Hamilton in the middle as runner-up. Mercedes driver Hamilton has been locked in a war of words with rival manufacturer Red Bull over their breach of the FIA cost cap with his rivals asking for an apology over comments made.

The jeering wasn't the first problem drivers had encountered with Mexican fans this weekend. Drivers from several teams spoke about being "grabbed and chased" by over-zealous fans at the event as well.

Despite hearing the boos Hamilton instead praised those who cheered him. He said: "This has been an amazing crowd, a bit awkward this time round, boos all day, but nevertheless I have so much love for Mexico and the people here," said Hamilton after finishing second behind Verstappen.

Fans in the grandstands were wearing Red Bull merchandise and were very pleased to see Verstappen win the battle against Mercedes rival Hamilton. However, Perez was seen wagging his finger at his home crowd directed at those jeering the seven-time world champion.

After qualifying third Hamilton was hoping for a first race win of the season but bemoaned starting on medium rather than soft tyres handing rival Verstappen an early advantage.

"I was close in that first stint, but the Red Bulls are too fast, and ultimately they had the better strategy. I am not sure it was the right tyre. I thought we should have started on the softs," Hamilton added.

"When I was on the medium tyres there wasn't really any degradation when they pulled me in, so I think ultimately we should have been on the softs. It's something that I had asked and questioned. I thought maybe one of us, the two Mercedes, should have a soft to be able to attack.

"When both Red Bulls, and everyone behind, took their tyres off and had softs, I thought 'shoot'."

Ultimately Hamilton was helpless in stopping Verstappen taking a record breaking 14th win of the season - the only F1 driver to take so many victories in a single campaign. Despite having the home support Perez was in his team-mate's footsteps again taking his 10th podium of the season.
