Sergio Perez has officially extended his contract with Red Bull, committing to the Formula 1 team through 2026. The Mexican driver, known as 'Checo', had been facing speculation about his future with the team due to challenges in matching the pace of his teammate, Max Verstappen, the defending champion.
Despite not having won a race since April 2023, Perez has been praised for his defensive driving skills, particularly in supporting Verstappen's title-winning efforts. Verstappen currently leads the standings this season with 169 points, with Perez in fifth place with 107 points.
In a statement released by the team, Perez expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him and vowed to deliver excellent results both on and off the track. The extension means Perez will also be driving under the new rules set to be introduced in 2026, which will see cars relying more on the electric component of their hybrid systems.
Red Bull's decision to retain Perez ensures continuity and stability within the team, with both Perez and Verstappen forming a successful partnership. With Lewis Hamilton departing Mercedes for Ferrari next year, Red Bull is set to maintain its lineup for the 2025 season.
Perez, who joined Red Bull in 2021, has secured five race victories with the team and an additional win with Racing Point in 2020. The extension of his contract signifies a commitment to pursuing further championships together.
