Sergio Aguero sends 'phenomenal' message to Man City after Julian Alvarez transfer

Sergio Aguero has told Manchester City it would be better if phenomenal signing Julian Alvarez touches down at the Etihad Stadium this summer. The 22-year-old was signed by the Premier League champions during the January transfer window, but immediately returned to boyhood side River Plate on loan.

Aguero departed City last summer and - in their search for his replacement - figures in the boardroom were priced out of a move for England captain Harry Kane. As attentions turn to the summer, the club are thought to be among the front-runners to sign Borussia Dortmund goal machine Erling Haaland.

No matter what happens on that front, though, City have already struck-up one deal in attacking quarters. Costing an initial £20.7million, Alvarez has scored 41 goals and provided 25 assists in 103 games for River Plate.

There is some suggestion City might look to extend his return loan beyond this season - especially considering the differences between footballing calendars in Europe and across South America. However, according to Aguero, the arrival needs to happen sooner rather than later.

During an interview with ESPN in Argentina, former City striker Aguero said: "Julian Alvarez is mature and over time he will continue to learn things, he's learning more and more and Manchester City bought him for a reason.

"He's a good kid, he's a phenomenon, shy and quiet. It'll be better if he goes to City in June."

Aguero signed for City from Atletico Madrid (for £36million) in 2011 and went on to score a club record 260 goals in 390 appearances. However, the ever-popular Argentine was forced to hang up his boots prematurely after suffering a heart scare in one of five outings during a short follow-up spell at Barcelona.
