Sergio Agüero: Premier League Legend Breaks Silence After Horror Injury

Sergio Agüero’s post-retirement senior career has been put on hold indefinitely after a nasty Achilles injury the Manchester City legend suffered while playing a match for players over the age of 35.

Agüero, whose pro career abruptly ended in 2021 when chest discomfort in just his fifth Barcelona appearance was diagnosed as cardiac arrhythmia, was in action for a veteran team representing boyhood club Independiente.

It was a clash against River Plate in Argentina’s +35 Senior League Cup, which Agüero’s team eventually won 2–0 after losing him to a “heavy blow” to his left ankle.

The 37-year-old was helped from the pitch by teammates and opponents, after which he recorded a video for an Instagram story to explain what had happened.

“I had an MRI and it was confirmed that I tore my [Achilles] tendon,” he Agüero revealed.

“Tomorrow, I will start the tests and I will have to have surgery. There’s no other option. I want to thank all the boys from Independiente and also those from River who were worried.”

After going under the knife, Agüero shared a smiling picture from his hospital bed.

Since his retirement, Agüero has played in Kings League. He took to the court himself in Spain in 2023, while his KRÜ FC team is currently competing in Kings League Mexico in 2026.

But returning to full-sided matches for the club he adored growing up was something else.

Having left Independiente to join Atlético Madrid at the age of 18, Agüero had always hoped to return one day. The heart problem discovered when he was 33, having probably expected to extend his career beyond his two-year contract at Barcelona, meant it was never able to happen. And while playing veterans’ matches isn’t quite the same, it still helped make his dream a reality.

Only days before rupturing his Achilles, the ex-Argentina international spoke with joy about having the chance: “I’m going to be around here, so I hope to keep adding games.”

The recovery from an Achilles rupture—arguably soccer’s worst injury, more devastating than an ACL tear—could be a year or more. It raises questions when, or even if, Agüero might play again.

Following news of the injury, a touching social media post from Atlético read: “Kun, all the strength to get through this injury. You overcame them as a player and you’ll do it again. We love you.”
