Sergio Aguero is still ace, Man City deal United body blow and £113m LaLiga 'target' re-emerges

Hello and welcome to the latest edition of the City Is Ours daily digest, your daily dose of Manchester City news you might have missed.

We already knew that Manchester City are miles ahead of United on the pitch, but now they have overtaken them off it too.

Sergio Aguero, who stuck it to the Reds over 10 glorious seasons, has issued an encouraging health update.

Meanwhile, a busy summer beckons for City as an old transfer flame is possibly reignited.

City avoid pandemic slump

Yesterday it was reported that City's commercial income this season is set to eclipse United's, but today we can tell you that the Blues' revenues have already done so.

According to consultants at KPMG (as reported in the Financial Times) City recorded operating revenues of €644m in the 2020/21 season, up 17 per cent year on year. The figure covers broadcast, matchday and commercial income. City declined to comment on the report.

Winning the Premier League title and reaching the final of the Champions League helped City to avoid the financial impacts many Premier League clubs felt during the pandemic.

Meanwhile, Manchester United took home €557m last season, the first time they have fallen behind City in this regard.

Our view: After largely bettering United on the pitch over the last 10 years, it's no surprise that City have now overtaken them off it too.

Commercial deals of course account for a large chunk of City's revenue, but so does on-field success - the run to the Champions League final brought in €129.5m from UEFA.

This is just the latest indicator that City are no longer just 'noisy neighbours'. Oh, and what was the point of commercial and football genius Ed Woodward, exactly?

Sergio Aguero update

Sergio Aguero's retirement from professional football last month was upsetting news for City fans but the Argentine has posted an encouraging update to his Instagram page.

Aguero went down off the ball when playing for Barcelona in October and retired in December after being diagnosed with a heart arrhythmia.

This week he posted a video of him playing tennis with a friend in South America, proof that he is back doing exercise and that his condition will hopefully not affect him too much in his day-to-day life.

Our view: We're sure all City fans will agree that it's fantastic to see Sergio playing sport again, even if it is not out on the football pitch.

Recent reports have suggested that he could return to City in an ambassadorial role, so perhaps we will see him near a grass pitch, rather than a clay court, soon.

Old flame reignites

According to O Jogo (via Sport Witness), a potential move for Atletico Madrid's Joao Felix might not be off the cards just yet for City.

City have been linked with the 22-year-old Portuguese attacker for a few years now, both before and after Atletico signed him from Benfica for £113 in 2019.

Joao Felix has never looked entirely comfortable in Madrid, but Guardiola is believed to be a big admirer.

O Jogo suggest that another potential City target - Benfica's Darwin Nunez - will be a target for Atletico this summer, but only if they raise funds by selling Joao Felix to City and Newcastle don't swoop in before them, as is being suggested.

Our view: There is no doubt that Pep could do exciting things with Joao Felix in his side, but it's questionable whether City really need that kind of attacker.

City's big want this summer is a striker and the Portugal international just isn't that. He is a very Guardiola-style attacker, but then City have plenty of those already.

Maybe if any of City's key attackers leave there could be legs in this. Otherwise you would hope that City will prioritise a move for striker Erling Haaland.
