Sergio Aguero and Kevin de Bruyne have same favourite Liverpool player

Sergio Aguero has named Michael Owen as his favourite-ever Liverpool player, having idolised the striker when growing up.

The ex-Manchester City forward recently announced his retirement in November after discovering he had cardiac arrhythmia while playing for Barcelona.

The 33-year-old was a formidable force during his decade in England, scoring 260 goals for City in all competitions.

In a Twitter Q&A on Tuesday, Aguero reiterated his admiration for Owen by naming him as his favourite Liverpool player, having previously lauded the ex-Red for capturing his imagination during the 1998 World Cup.

"Look, to me the Premier League is... when I was a kid I was looking up to Michael Owen," Aguero said in 2020 during an interview with Thierry Henry.

"I've always said it, even in my book, I like him because he's small, he had the No.10 just like me in my club and he played as a forward.

"So I told myself, if a small player like him is doing well in the Premier League, I could make it too.

"Imagine that I was only a kid, I was 9-10-years-old, it was in 1998, he scored this amazing goal with England, I was a kid and when I saw that goal I couldn't believe my eyes.

"I was watching the World Cup in my neighbourhood and I was telling everyone that I loved Owen ."

Aguero is not the only player with Manchester City connections to have grown up idolising Owen, though.

Childhood footage of Kevin De Brunye emerged in 2018 of the Belgian praising Owen and Liverpool, while part of Belgian side Gent's academy.

In the clip, De Brunye said: "My favourite team is Liverpool. My favourite player is Michael Owen and I would like to play there."
