NEW DELHI: Nikhat Zareen couldn’t control her emotions. And why would she? The star Indian boxer presented herself an early birthday gift when she outpunched Thailand’s Jutamas Jitpong by a unanimous 5-0 decision to scalp the biggest medal of her bright career – a maiden World Championships gold, in the women’s flyweight (52kg) division.
Tears of joy rolled down Nikhat’s eyes, as she raised her hands up in the air to thank the almighty and ran towards head coach Bhaskar Bhatt in the corner to give him a tight hug. Nikhat, the newest entrant to the country’s women boxing gold medal club, was carried off shoulder high by Bhatt at the Basaksehir Youth and Sports Facility arena, as the other two members of the coaching staff followed them with the Tri-colour draped around them.
