A senior Welsh Labour MP has had her party membership suspended after being accused of bullying her Neath constituency staff, the Guardian has reported.
Christina Rees, who was shadow Wales secretary under Jeremy Corbyn, has been stripped of the party whip and will now sit as an independent until an internal investigation is carried out.
According to the Guardian, local party members have claimed that several of Ms Rees' staff had made detailed statements to Labour headquarters. One senior constituency figure claimed to the Guardian that the alleged behaviour had been going on for years.
In a statement released to the paper, Ms Rees said: "There has been a complaint made against me to the Labour party, which is under investigation and I am therefore under an administrative suspension until the process is concluded. I’m not aware of the details of the complaint but I am fully cooperating with the investigation."
The Neath MP won her seat in the 2015 General Election taking over from Labour former cabinet minister Peter Hain. She was previously married to former Welsh Secretary Ron Davies. She is a qualified barrister who represented Wales at squash internationally.
The Labour party will not comment on individual cases because its disciplinary procedures are confidential. Ms Rees has been contacted for comment.
