A senior Russian general was killed Tuesday by a bomb hidden in a scooter outside his apartment building in Moscow, a day after Ukraine’s security service leveled criminal charges against him. The general, who was the chief of the military’s nuclear, biological, and chemical protection forces, was targeted as he left for his office. His assistant also lost his life in the attack.
The deceased general, who was under sanctions from various countries for his involvement in Moscow’s war in Ukraine, had criminal charges filed against him by Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) on Monday. The SBU has claimed responsibility for the attack, labeling the general as a 'war criminal and an entirely legitimate target.'
The SBU has accused Russia of using chemical weapons on numerous occasions since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The U.S. State Department also reported the use of chloropicrin, a poison gas, against Ukrainian troops. However, Russia has denied these allegations and accused Ukraine of using toxic agents in combat.
The bomb that killed the general was remotely triggered, causing damage to the surrounding area. Russian authorities are investigating the incident as an act of terrorism and have vowed to retaliate against Ukraine.
Over the past year, targeted attacks believed to be orchestrated by Ukraine have claimed the lives of several prominent figures in Russia. These incidents have escalated tensions between the two countries, with both sides accusing each other of military aggression and unlawful tactics.
The latest attack on the Russian general has further strained relations between Russia and Ukraine, with both sides vowing to seek justice for their respective losses.
