Senegal punished by FIFA after incident targeting Liverpool's Mohamed Salah

Senegal have been fined by FIFA following their FIFA World Cup qualifier victory over Egypt in March.

Sadio Mane scored the winning penalty for his national team against Egypt to book their place in this winter's World Cup in Qatar. They progressed 3-1 on penalties after an aggregate score of 1-1 over the two legs.

His Liverpool teammate and Egypt captain Mohamed Salah blasted his penalty kick over the bar as they fell to another penalty shootout defeat at the hands of Senegal, following the Africa Cup of Nationals final which took place on February 6.

Throughout the match at the Stade Léopold Sédar Senghor in Senegal, laser pens were used by supporters and projected onto the faces of the Egypt players. Including, when the Premier League's top goalscorer stepped up to take his penalty.

On Monday, FIFA's disciplinary committee fined Senegal 175,000 Swiss francs ($180,000) for fan disorder, including the use of laser pointers. They also looked into a pitch invasion from the home supporters, as well as an offensive banner.

Aliou Cisse's side will also be required to play a future competitive fixture behind closed doors.

The 2022 World Cup kicks off on November 21 and Senegal have been drawn into Group A with Qatar, Ecuador and the Netherlands. The opening match of the tournament will take place at the Al Thumama Stadium Mane and Virgil van Dijk (Netherlands) will face each other with their respective national teams.
