Senegal make Edouard Mendy call-up decision after Chelsea goalkeeper returns to training

Edouard Mendy will not feature for Senegal during the upcoming international break as he continues his comeback from injury.

The Chelsea goalkeeper returned to training this week after surgery on a broken finger at the start of the year.

It has been a slow, steady return for Mendy, 31, who was back in individual training a fortnight ago and is also set to miss his club’s fixture with Everton on Saturday.

Chelsea then break up for the international break, which sees Senegal face Mozambique home and away in qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Aliou Cisse’s squad, released on Friday, did not feature Mendy with QPR shot-stopper Seny Dieng called up alongside Alfred Gomis, on loan at Serie B club Como, and Clermont’s Mory Diaw.

The earliest Mendy can now return to playing action is the Premier League visit of Aston Villa on April 1.

Chelsea are also without Cesar Azpilicueta, Thiago Silva, Armando Broja, Mason Mount and Raheem Sterling for the game against Everton.
