Sending vulnerable asylum seekers to Rwanda is yet another shameful policy from this out-of-touch Tory government. High Court judges may have ruled that Suella Braverman’s plan is legal but there is no doubt whatsoever about how cruel and inhumane it is.
For 12 years, this pathetic Conservative Party has ruined the economy, plunged millions into poverty and damaged the UK’s reputation around the world. Liz Truss and Kwasi Kwarteng made us a laughing stock after their disastrous mini budget.
Now Sunak and his Home Secretary are hellbent on making us the baddies of the world. Not only is this policy abhorrent, it is costing the taxpayer millions of pounds to send people on a one-way ticket to east Africa.
Money should be spent here making sure vulnerable people are able to pay their skyrocketing energy bills to get through the tough winter months during the cost-of-living crisis. The plan is supposed to deter people from coming to the UK but it is just another hoax.
On the day it was announced earlier this year, more than 400 migrants crossed the Channel and more have come over since then. It is unworkable, costly and inhumane, but it is straight out of the Tory textbook.
Despite the legal challenges, the government has been determined to get this policy through the courts as they know it appeals to their base. The right-wing section of the party has been calling the shots for some time now, so the sooner they are gone from office, the better.
It’s plane wrong
Christmas is a time when everybody wants to be surrounded by their families. So spare a thought for the Scots oil workers stranded on a rig in the Danish sector of the North Sea with just days to go until Santa arrives.
Rough weather meant their transport back to Scotland for the festive holiday was cancelled. And they say their bosses are refusing to put on special flights to get them home in time for the 25th.
These are guys that work hard all year round in the toughest conditions imaginable – so if anyone deserves a Christmas break, it is them. We implore the bosses at TotalEnergies, who operate the Tyra rigs off the Danish coast, to let a little festive cheer into their hearts.
Help them get home to Scotland, even if it costs a few quid to get the flights arranged. We hope this is a Christmas story that has a happy ending.
