Each week hundreds risk all crossing the Channel to seek sanctuary in Britain.
Everyone agrees more must be done to stop people traffickers from plying their vile trade.
But the Government’s response - deporting asylum seekers to distant Rwanda - is inhumane, costly and impractical.
It will do little to deter desperate people from trying to enter Britain, nor will it tackle migrant smuggling and human trafficking.
Taxpayers’ money would be better spent on clearing the 70,000 backlog of asylum claims waiting to be processed by the Home Office.
Sending people to Rwanda is not a workable policy but a cynical gimmick by a Prime Minister desperate to move the agenda
on from Partygate.
The Prime Minister is not interested in trying to find a genuine solution to the Channel crossings, his only motivation is to find an issue with which to attack the opposition.
It shows how low the Tories are prepared to stoop that they are willing to exploit the plight of people who have fled war, torture and abuse.
Crunch vote
Next week Boris Johnson will face MPs for the first time since he was fined for breaking lockdown rules.
Some senior Conservatives are suggesting he should submit himself to a confidence vote.
This should not be necessary.
If the Prime Minister had any honour he would have resigned by now.
However, the vote would expose which side Tory MPs are on.
They will be forced to show whether they believe in decency and integrity or whether they believe it is acceptable for a Minister to mislead Parliament and break the law.
A ray we go...
The Easter weekend is traditionally a washout but this year much of Britain is set for a mini heatwave.
If you are lucky and get time off, enjoy the weather while you can. And if the sun doesn’t shine where you live, hopefully it will next year.
