Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer addressed reporters on Friday night, indicating that the Senate is actively working on a plan to pass the stop gap funding package. Schumer mentioned that the Senate is currently engaged in the amendment process to move the plan forward.
When questioned about the outlook on the debt ceiling for the upcoming year, Schumer refrained from confirming whether he aligns with Democrats who suggest engaging on the matter only if certain conditions are met. He emphasized that the timing was not suitable to include the debt limit in any agreement related to the continuing resolution.
Schumer expressed satisfaction that Republican leadership and members stood firm against Elon Musk's views on debt, highlighting the importance of not succumbing to external influences. He declined to comment on whether former President Trump is overly influenced by Musk, which reportedly impacted a bipartisan deal earlier in the week.
Despite not achieving all their objectives, Schumer emphasized the significance of securing disaster relief funding and averting a government shutdown. He noted that while the Democrats did not secure the debt ceiling, they successfully kept the government operational, which he considered a major victory. Schumer pointed out the positive response to the House vote, indicating widespread support for the measures taken.
