Top Senate Democrats on the Judiciary committee are urging the House Ethics committee to make public their findings on former Congressman Matt Gaetz. This call comes after President-elect Donald Trump nominated Gaetz for the position of attorney general.
Senate Judiciary chair Dick Durbin, along with Senators Richard Blumenthal and Chris Coons, are among those demanding the release of the report. Durbin emphasized the importance of transparency, stating that the timing of Gaetz's resignation from the House raises concerns about the contents of the Ethics committee report.
The House Ethics committee had been conducting a lengthy investigation into Gaetz, focusing on allegations of sexual misconduct, drug use, improper gifts, favoritism, and obstruction of government investigations. Gaetz has consistently denied any wrongdoing, including allegations of engaging in illegal activities.
With Gaetz's resignation from Congress, the Ethics committee's investigation came to an end. The committee had a limited timeframe to release its report, as it does not publish reports close to elections. The probe into Gaetz would have concluded if he had not resigned to pursue the attorney general confirmation process.
Despite the ongoing controversy surrounding Gaetz, the Ethics committee's findings remain undisclosed. Senate Democrats are pushing for the report to be shared with the Senate Judiciary committee to ensure transparency and accountability.
