With the scheduled launch of Semicon 2.0 on Sept 17, GoI is signalling that India is ready to move from participation in the global semiconductor value chain to a larger role in shaping it. The policy reflects the need for India's semiconductor strategy to focus on the full ecosystem. But the harder question is how fast and with whom.
That question has a deadline. AI is resetting the scale of semiconductor demand. Based on SEMI's World Fab Forecast data, the global semiconductor industry will need more than 50 new fabs from 2029 to 2035 to support build-out of AI infrastructure. Decisions about where those fabs, and supplier bases around them, will sit are being made now, not in 2029.
