Selkirk Burns Club holds 59th Burns Supper in Kirkcudbright

The Selkirk Burns Club held its 59th Annual Burns Supper in the Selkirk Arms, Kirkcudbright, on Friday night.

Chairman George Whan welcomed 70 cronies and guests to an evening of convivial company of which the Bard himself would have enjoyed.

The Rev David Gourlay proposed the Selkirk Grace.

Stuart Currie was welcomed as the new club piper and he piped in the haggis which was carried by Norman Richardson.

The haggis was addressed by club member Joe Osborne for the first time.

The Rev Graham Finch toasted the town of Kirkcudbright in a very entertaining and informative way, highlighting his love for the place.

Colin Gibson, President of Thornhill Burns Club, proposed the Immortal Memory and had the audience spellbound with his quick wit and observations on the Bard’s life.

Lyall Eccles, a newcomer to the Burns scene, proposed agriculture, comparing farming in Burns time with that of today.

Club member Geoff Dean toasted the Lassies, drawing on his personal experience of Scots lassies as a native of Birmingham.

Andy Campbell had the audience spellbound with his animated version of the epic poem, Tam O’Shanter.

The artistes all received standing ovations for their contributions to one of the most successful suppers in years.

The vote of thanks was proposed by Ian Swan.

Musical accompanist was Iain Smith.

Chairman Whan intimated to the assembled company that next year is the 60th anniversary of the formation of the club and plans are well advanced for the celebration.
