Select list of winners at 2023 Tony Awards

The 76th Tony Awards have drawn to a close after a lively ceremony at which Liverpool’s Jodie Comer was among the major winners of the night.

The biggest night in Broadway took place on Sunday night (11 June) at the United Palace in Manhattan’s Washington Heights neighbourhood.

Hosted by Academy Award-winner Ariana Debose, this year’s ceremony was noticeably different to its past iterations due to the ongoing Hollywood writers’ strike.

The strike was referenced both playfully and then in detail by DeBose in her opening segment, in which the actor showed support for her “siblings” at the Writers Guild of America.

The West Side Story star explained to viewers that as a result of the strikes, neither herself nor anyone on stage would be reading from a script, since the scripts are typically written by members of the WGA.

Elsewhere in the ceremony, Alex Newell and J Harrison Ghee made history with their triumphs as the first openly non-binary actors to win Tony awards.

Meanwhile, viewers were left baffled after Parade director Michael Arden’s passionate acceptance speech was censored by CBS after he hit out at a homophobic slur.
