Segway's New Electric Dirtbike Packs A Serious Punch, And Is Definitely Not A Toy

Today's electric dirt bikes didn’t just show up out of nowhere. They grew out of a segment that’s always been about access and experimentation. From backyard minibikes to entry level trail machines, off-road riding has long been the easiest way into motorcycling. No plates, no traffic, just a patch of dirt and a throttle.

That ease of access is exactly why electric power has found a real home in the off-road space. Instant torque works well off-road, quiet motors open up more riding areas, and maintenance drops to basically nothing more than tires and brake pads.

That backdrop matters when talking about the latest move from Segway. Most people still associate the brand with self-balancing scooters, but Segway today is a Chinese-owned global tech company that’s been steadily expanding into powersports. Its electric dirt bike push isn’t a gimmick. It’s a logical extension of what the brand already knows best: sensors, software, and control systems.

The new Xaber 300 is Segway’s clearest statement yet. Inspired by the company’s Dakar Rally prototype, it’s aimed squarely at riders who actually care about how a bike behaves off-road, not just how fast it goes in a straight line. Instead of chasing big horsepower numbers, Segway focused on something more interesting.

What's interesting here is how Segway leveraged its expertise in sensors to give the rider a better sense of control. Not traction control as a buzzword, but rider-adjustable behavior. Using gyroscopic sensors originally developed for Segway’s self-balancing products, the Xaber 300 lets riders set maximum wheelie angles through the app. That’s wild. For beginners, it’s a safety net that builds confidence. And for experienced riders, it’s a tunable tool that lets you ride harder without constantly riding the edge.

From there, everything else falls into place. The Xaber 300 offers three selectable power modes designed to feel like riding 150cc, 200cc, or 300cc gas bikes. It’s effectively three personalities in one machine, which makes it easier to grow with the bike instead of outgrowing it. There’s also a virtual electronic clutch for riders who want a familiar left-hand feel, even though electric bikes don’t technically need one.

Off-road tech continues with selectable traction control for different terrain types, plus geo-fencing, speed limits, and parental controls baked in. That last part matters more than it sounds. Electric dirt bikes are quickly becoming a gateway for younger riders and families, and software-based limits make that transition far less intimidating.

Segway claims a class-leading power-to-weight ratio, though exact horsepower figures haven’t been finalized yet. What we do know is that the bike is designed to feel light, responsive, and easy to manage, which matters more than raw numbers once the trail gets rough. Suspension travel, wheel sizes, and geometry are all aimed at real dirt use, not backyard novelty riding.

And at a starting price of $5,299 with availability expected in spring or summer 2026, the Xaber 300 lands in a sweet spot. It’s not a toy, but it’s not priced like a boutique electric race bike, either. For US riders curious about electric off-road riding, it represents something the segment desperately needs: choice.

Electric dirt bikes are popular because they lower barriers. Segway’s take pushes that idea further by using software not just to limit riders, but to help them ride better. That’s the quiet shift happening here. Less focus on spec sheet bragging rights, more focus on how riders actually experience the bike. And that’s how electric off-road keeps moving forward.
