SeeWoo Glasgow announces closure of Possilpark supermarket months after reopening

SeeWoo Glasgow has announced the shock closure of their iconic Possilpark supermarket just months after reopening.

Scotland's largest Asian supermarket only welcomed customers through the door once more in March this year after coming back into ownership of the SeeWoo Group.

It was long been heralded as 'the ultimate destination for East and Southeast Asian food lovers', while also supplying dozens of the city's top Asian restaurants.

However, bosses have today confirmed news that the store is closing, with rising energy costs and a slower than expected sales recovery, making the business 'unsustainable' and the economic challenges "too much".

They added that, despite doing "everything possible" to make it work over the past six months, they have "run out of time". Their flagship Chinatown store will remain open for business.

The full post on SeeWoo Glasgow's Instagram page confirming news of the closure read: "It is with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of the SeeWoo Glasgow store.

"The store was originally part of the SeeWoo Group, but left our ownership in 2017, after a demerger of the SeeWoo business resulting in the Glasgow and Greenwich stores being owned by another family member. In late 2021 their businesses went into administration, and we re-acquired the Glasgow store with the great hope that we could restore and grow the business.

"Over the past 6 months we have done everything possible to make it work, and we believe that the Scottish market presents a huge opportunity. However, the unprecedented rise in energy costs, coupled with a slower than expected sales recovery, has made the business unsustainable. Like so many businesses, the economic challenges just became too much.

"We have tried everything possible to keep it going and we are absolutely gutted that we have run out of time and couldn’t make it work. We had such high hopes for the Glasgow store. We thank our loyal customers for your understanding and support, and our staff for their hard work and dedication. Our flagship Chinatown store remains open for business and we look forward to the future.

"Thank you for your support, always."
