Our round-up of roadworks and road closures will help drivers plan their journeys in advance. We have used information from traffic experts to highlight which roads and streets are expected to be closed or may have temporary measures in place.
Diversion routes may be in place in some areas, so motorists are urged to check if any of the following works are likely to disrupt their journeys. These road closures are for the week running Monday, March 20, to Sunday, March 26.
Newcastle
Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on A186 Mosley Street, at Dean Street. Until September.
Temporary traffic lights due to gas main work on B1600 Stoddart Street between Shieldfield Lane and Union Street. Until December.
Temporary traffic lights due to telecoms work on Armstrong Road, Benwell, at South Benwell Road. Until March 23.
Birnham Place, Kenton, in both directions closed due to resurfacing work between Brigham Avenue and Wycliffe Avenue. Until March 21.
Temporary traffic lights due to telecoms work on Cedar Road, Fenham, at Olive Place. Until 3.30pm on March 24.
Cut Bank in both directions closed due to roadworks between A186 City Road and Lime Street. Until May.
Kingsway in both directions closed due to roadworks between Fenham Hall Drive and Queensway. Until March 29.
Redheugh Bridge Road closed due to roadworks from Shot Factory Lane to A695 Railway Street. Until June.
Saville Row closed due to roadworks from Northumberland Street to North Street. Until April 9.
Wychcroft Way in both directions closed due to roadworks between Sunnyway and Cambo Green. Until April 14.
Northumberland
A686, Haydon Bridge, in both directions closed due to roadworks between the Langley Castle Hotel and A69. Until April 10.
A1171 Westmorland Way, Cramlington, in both directions closed due to roadworks between Crow Hall Lane and A1172 Station Road. Until March 31.
Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on A697 at B6344. Until 5pm on April 14.
Temporary traffic lights due to gas main work on Malvins Road, Blyth, near Kings Gardens. Until April 5.
North Tyneside
A189 Northbound, West Moor, closed due to roadworks during the night from Great Lime Road to A1056 Killingworth Way. Between 8pm and 6am Mondays to Sundays from 8pm on March 20 to 6am on April 10.
Temporary traffic lights due to gas main work on A187 Prudhoe Street, North Shields, at A1149 Coach Lane. On the roundabout. Until March 24.
Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on A188 Benton Lane at West Farm Avenue. Until June.
One lane closed due to roadworks on A189 at A1056 Killingworth Way. On the roundabout. Near to High Gosforth Park. Until April 7.
Temporary traffic lights due to electricity work on A193 High Street West, Wallsend, at Carville Road. Until March 20.
Bell Street, North Shields, in both directions closed due to roadworks between Liddell Street and Union Quay. Until May 2024.

Temporary traffic lights due to electricity work on Grand Parade, Cullercoats, at Beach Road. Until April 7.
Temporary traffic lights due to long-term roadworks on Liddell Street near Clive Street. Until May 2024.
Temporary traffic lights due to gas main work on Marmion Terrace, Monkseaton, at Abbotsford Park. Until March 24.
Tyne Street in both directions closed due to roadworks from Union Street to Stephenson Street. Until May 15.
Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on West Bailey, Killingworth, between Citadel West and Southgate. Until March 20.
South Tyneside
A1018 Sunderland Road, Westoe, South Shields, One Way Street closed due to resurfacing work between Mowbray Road and B1301 Dean Road. Until 5pm on April 2.
Quarry Lane, Harton, South Shields, in both directions closed due to gas main work between Sunderland Road and Redwood Avenue. Until 5pm on March 24.
West Holborn in both directions closed due to roadworks from Laygate Street to Weetman Street. Until 6pm on March 31.
Sunderland
No through traffic allowed due to roadworks on Burdon Lane in both directions between Woodham Drive (Ryhope, Sunderland) and Burdon Turn-off (Burdon, Sunderland). Construction of the new Ryhope to Doxford Link road. Until August.
No through traffic allowed due to roadworks on Redburn Row in both directions between Black Boy Road and B1284. Until September.
County Durham
Wallnook Lane in both directions closed due to roadworks between Front Terrace and Firs Terrace. Until December 2024.
Gateshead
Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on Cushy Cow Lane from Hexham Old Road to Mullen Drive. Until July.
Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on Hexham Old Road between Grange Drive and B6317. Until July.
Rose Street, Teams, Gateshead, in both directions closed due to roadworks between Morrison Street and Autumn Drive. Until May.
Narrow lanes and speed restriction of 50mph due to major widening works on A1 Western Bypass in both directions from J67 Kingsway South (Coalhouse Roundabout) to A1(M) J65 / A194M Birtley. Work to create an extra lane in each direction. Until May 2025.
