Security Heightened In DC For Summer Events

The headquarters of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is seen in Washington, D.C.

Law enforcement in Washington, D.C. is gearing up for a potentially tumultuous summer as a series of high-profile events are expected to draw protests and demonstrations. The upcoming months will see a convergence of significant gatherings, starting with the Supreme Court's anticipated rulings in late June, including a decision on former President Donald Trump's immunity claim.

Security measures are already visible, with bike rack fencing being erected around the Supreme Court in preparation for the rulings. Capitol Police are collaborating with Supreme Court Police to ensure security during this period.

US Capitol Police Chief Tom Manger expressed confidence in the department's readiness for the busy summer ahead, which includes the NATO summit in July and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's visit to Washington.

Authorities are bracing for potential unrest, with expectations of large-scale demonstrations following the events of January 6, 2021. The Metropolitan Police Department in D.C. is preparing for the possibility of mass arrests, as intelligence suggests a high volume of protests throughout the summer.

Security concerns extend beyond the summer months, with heightened vigilance expected around key dates in November and January, such as the presidential election and the inauguration. Chief Manger emphasized that security plans are in place for every major event on Capitol Hill.

Capitol Police are set to deploy over 300 officers to assist with security at the Republican and Democratic National Conventions, marking the largest deployment of officers from the department to an event outside of D.C.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has designated the NATO summit as a National Special Security Event, underscoring the significance of the gathering. The Secret Service will lead operational security planning, supported by federal agencies like the FBI and FEMA.

DC police are increasing staffing ahead of the NATO summit, with the entire department expected to work 12-hour shifts during the event. The FBI is leading counterterrorism efforts, while the Secret Service will enhance security for foreign diplomats and leaders attending the summit.

Concerns surrounding Netanyahu's visit stem from past anti-Israel protests, with Capitol Police monitoring intelligence and planning heightened officer deployments for his address to Congress on July 24.
